As a child prodigy, Felix Mendelssohn wrote his first pieces at the age of twelve, winning the admiration of Goethe and the entire German intellectual elite for his precociousness. What we later learned was that his sister Fanny, four years his senior, also played a hand in developing the exceptional maturity of the young Felix’s work. She too was also an extraordinary musician and left a marvellous body of work, including a Piano Trio whose style confirms the great musical influence she had on her brother.
